Social Emotional Learning Curriculum

The purpose of the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum is to teach children to “understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” (CASEL, 2020) The guidance counselor and classroom teacher provide direct instruction in these areas to all students so that they develop the social and emotional skills to be able to learn. The curriculum is based on the standards from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

The CASEL frameworks are divided into the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. Each area is further broken down into specific skills. The classroom teacher and/or guidance counselor uses classroom lessons during Morning Meeting and Advisory times, and will integrate with academic learning and school wide activities to provide opportunities for students to learn and demonstrate these skills.

The SEL Curriculum is also shared among the School Guidance, Family and Consumer Science, and Health curriculums.
