Directions: 1. Record the following information in the table below.
Name of plant
Days to germination
# of seeds in packet
# of seeds germinated
Fraction of seeds germinated
Decimal of seeds germinated
% of seeds germinated
2. Plant your seeds and label the plant tray.

Our Garden Rocks!
The Garden committee wants to put a new layer of rocks in between the garden beds in the spring time. The cost of the rocks the committee will use breaks down to $0.15 for every square foot of rock. Your mission is to find out how much it will cost to spread this amount of rock (remember that you are only spreading rocks in the spaces between the garden beds and the flower beds…irregular shapes!).
Follow the steps below.
1. Draw a sketch of the aerial view of the garden. Include: the surrounding fence, the rectangular garden beds, the triangular flower boxes.
2. Measure the dimensions of each item in your sketch (in feet and inches), label each dimension on your sketch.
3. Find how many square feet of rock there is in the garden (area of irregulars), use the method of finding the area of irregular shapes from class.
4. What is the area where rocks will be spread? ________
5. How much will it cost to cover this area? ________
6. Do a final draft. Create a scale to fit your garden on an 8 ˝” x 11” piece of graph paper. Follow your scale and make a final draft of the garden. You may estimate the distances the garden beds are from each other.
Our Garden Rocks Extension
a. Since you now know how many square feet of rock there is in our garden, how could you estimate the total number of individual rocks that it contains? Briefly explain your strategy. __________________________________________________________________________
b. Go outside with a teacher and carry out your plan to estimate the number of rocks contained in the whole garden. Show your work on the back of this paper. Estimated # of rocks in the whole garden: ___________
