Connecting with Belize

Our school has had a connection with schools in Belize, Central America, since 1990. Each year, at least one staff member has traveled there during February vacation to share, collaborate and learn from the teachers and students in the Toledo and Stann Creek Districts.

(Staff who have traveled to Belize, include Sharry Sparks, Ron Fortier, Joy Page, Matt Downer, Ann Jule, Piper Cronin and Sheila Adams)

Belize

2009

This winter has provided quite a bit of snow for the beginning of 2011. We experienced 5 snow days in about one month. The 7th graders decided to create a "snow storm" for the Belizean students. They cut out many snowflakes from paper. They also wrote about their experiences before, during and after a snowstorm. We even taught them how to do a snow angel!

The snowflakes were distributed to several schools ranging from Standard II (grade 4) to First Form (9th grade). They were a hit! The students wanted to know how to make them. They were curious about how they were folded and cut. They also asked questions about the snow. We left stacks of RJH student papers with the teachers for the student to reread.

Ms. Cronin also took the Belizean students outside for their PE class. She taught them several games and they played  a favorite of "Duck, Duck, Goose." It was extremely hot and humid, but they all had fun!

This year, 2009, the 7th graders prepared several projects for the schools in Belize, Central America.

Past Projects

Ms. Sparks created 2 painted "quilts" with the students here at RJH. One remains in our lobby and the other was given to Big Falls School in the Toledo District of Belize. There the students worked on a quilt for our school. It turned into a community project with parents and grandparents coming after school to paint, many for the first time!

For several years now, we have been donating supplies to support the schools in the Toledo District.
